After the Midwest Poetry Summit,

settle in,

I sat on a wooden deck
regaling
the Midwest Poetry Summit,

what a night, sights
with friends
and poets,

tightly surrounded,
though alone,

whisky breath and sunburnt,

looking over
to
see Scott Seekins—the Artist, the artistry,
everywhere and nowhere at once: art,

here
were
local artists sitting in a corner,
all talking and laughing,

patting each other’s backs with hard-handed purpose—see(?),
an overzealous—bee sting effect,

saying: “we are” and “oh ho!”,
and smiling;

it was enough
to make a common person cry,

so
my eyelids
unhinged
a tidal wave
and
I
hugged
myself
to
death.

God Save Open Mic (a good place to judge art)

A room full of Artists standing high in watch,
One opens wide a mouth, exit words of thought,
An occurrence of perfect* art, too unmeasurably so;
Those in the crowd would attempt not to know.

*look up this word.

Reassessing Religion

Thou shall not behead Anyone, ever.

Thou shall not use the “Lord’s” name in vain.

Thou shall not wage Wars in my honor.

Thou shall not Believe in fictitious “Gods”.

Questions for Asking:

If I exist,

Can you see me?

If I am all-seeing,

Can you see me?

Do you see what I mean?

Selfie Job

Another day of internet fame

Giving our selfies to the world

Loving fake realism abound

Bright as diamonds and pearls.

We could reflect on vanity

We could unpack and unfurl

This camera lens needs a model,

Please be the next Cover Girl.

Recent Art: The Truly Amazing

Handpicked; no filter, true—why wait?

These photos; we are scrolling pages,

Even on fine dinner dates.

Selfless as one must be

To take the perfect selfie

Relax and snap that picture;

Capture your inner luxury.

Becoming as real as we are,

Face to face with the stars.

Cold Day July

Hot Coffee
Cold Day
Blue Sky
Why complain?

Books to entertain,
Existing on this plain.

Between life,
insight,
Likes
Bikes and Lakes-

There is nothing but happiness along the way.

How We Change (apocryphal)

Let slip ever gracious smile
Wearing guarded masked face
Traded out for something more
Fake laugh covers a spiteful distaste

What hangs under that brightly painted coat?
What meaning lies deep lined visage rote?
Opened eyes with cleared throat
Acutely minded, yet somehow remote

Someone once said
That someone once spoke
Now they don’t speak at all
Let those loose on thin lines fall

We can only change ourselves

Phased out- ostracized
Effectively unduly replaced
Not there,
AWOL in ways
Then they cut cantankerous chains…  (ostensibly)

Surprisingly,
We wonder why—
We care
We must say:
Who makes my day?
And am I okay?

We are all different from last week
Are you here, today?

Cash for Compromise

Local daily rags adorned capital paid ads
Words minced in between seldom seem
Pin-prick point disorder has been had
Cash for incompetence, that’s wastefully redeemed

One needs a paper shredder for some sort of pleasure
This old-time failing marketer’s scheme upon me
From what I’ve seen there are no stories to treasure
Eyes on the prize, a fat hand full of cash it gleans

Politics and stance change like the weather
The reader is the one losing sight of what’s seen
You read this, you read that; for the assumed equal measure
Avert inquisitive eyes, these lines of falsehood reign supreme

But what I ask in my own research is:
Who is pulling strings behind the scenes?

As one can say in full-view glory
It feels wonderful to produce an untainted story.

Who pays you?

Who writes your stories?

Are they the same person?

American Excess

The things we do

New tattoo cool

Trendy trading sexes

Serious life decisions

Free times we live in

We all need an intervention

What happened to happy with self?

Forget what I’ve mentioned

In good health

Struggle to get out of the haus

Make a statement

Cut from local cloth

Parts of the pavement

Thoughts we’ve engaged in

That which we’ve lost

Success:

American trivial astonishment

Humble in this jungle

Exhale smoke

Wash the sex with soap

Moments at the bar to recollect

Just out of respect

Death

Drugs

Expensive car wrecks

Celebrity intellect (what’s that?)

Rock and Roll

Hand prints in wet cement

What they expect (?)

Reluctant when stressed

Ich bin immer…

This is what an idiot looks like

Plenty to view in this modern societal zoo

Don’t feel bad

-Ya know, I’m there-you too?

All the best,

American regret

Life is hard for some

I’m more worried about my walk to school in the present tense…
