there are no part-timers in a capitalistic world.

true activism is
very important,
especially to
the career activist,
because
even if there
isn’t a problem yet
there is still
rent to pay.

and perhaps always
some imagination
to make.

how to solve all your problems

issue of the day,
and then i am better.
it’s like a light
came on in
utter twilight dark.
we couldn’t ask for more.
we couldn’t ask for less.
we couldn’t ask of ourselves.
calling signs of the time
in sighs and glaring
red eyes, we stayed
up all night to
make it to work
by nine, and tried to forget.
others complained, they had
nothing, just their words with meaning.
just their issues emboldened
of the day on social
media, so displayed.
surely we all know, and
surely we can all relate,
because we are here too
just as you, and
no different–
though you try to say,
while hoping for change
on a scrolling page.

because I look like this

Things that concern me
more than anything else
stem as the thick roots
of a century old oak

grown through barbwire fencing
and around hardened stones,
immense on a hillside,

entrenched in pastoral lands
so deep and so bloodied, with its past,
it would be hard to tear out entirely,

even if uprooted
we could never forget.

It comes from death stares
so sharp your heart beats faster
and you sweat,

heads turn in a snap on the neck
at the question you just asked—

one which you just simply can’t,
and where,

in a place of research and academia,
a place where words like “fact”, “objective” and “truth”

float up as shit in
a waste facilities plant.

Even with air quotes in inquiry
a person couldn’t truly
reflect, safely,

couldn’t say a “group” idea
had nothing to do with
the individual raising a pale hand,

posing a pure question,
asking of a device with logic

and understanding
used so precisely daily—

an openness that did not come to conclusions,
in ways that would affect me
up the street on the walk,
being called a “devil’s advocate”
and “wrong”.

See, I was bothered because I don’t
believe in the devil… or any Other god.

I pointed at my face and said,
“Just because I look like this?”

They answered with a nodding “yes”.
I told them it was nice
to have this conversation

and walked across the street
dreaming of epiphanies.

everyone, all important: and the legislation we don’t write

it takes on cracked radio waves
where a couch to rest on is,
a group of passionate people
to prove an important point…
but then there is nothing;
they would rally and disrupt,
but wouldn’t pull a single pen
to write a dot of legislation;
aimless, and still the group remains,
seething, holding signs: inequality,
exhaustive, as Occupy once was,
not realizing the implication,
of the reality: that is only
wealthy lives matter–to unify!
and one couldn’t pick a main
idea to write a paper on,
and will never hold hands with difference,
yet they could measure a day
walking, yelling, shouting, whatever,
in hopes that those listening
could change the way
that the wild wind blows.

but those ragged ears are powerless too,
they are the wrong demographic of listeners.

American Mammal

A bright sun crawls over
a hot sunroof to meet
the working day,
as bulbs on a computer screen flash,
amass the made up page.
Men and women slip
underneath, characteristics
become unaccounted for.
Unknowing they go, thinking alone,
believing in bold font & sharp tones—
subjective as fact, living each & every
day for a quick read, drink, and a sweet snack.
Then they are taken, as every other,
to a grand pasture, heaven.
Set out free on their own accord—
until a fence is met.
How quickly their heavy chains they forget,
how relaxed their time was spent.

They are mammals all the same,
animals until their dying day.

Epiphany at a U Slam Event

To my astonishment
there was none—

people were content
with old formulas
and bad news.

The “best poet I know”
spoke there.

It was a real treat.

***

Knowing that,
I can sleep a lot, a lot easier.
Yawn.

Chance Apologetic

Atonement for guilt
simply of being;

humans the way we are,
the unjust that we do.

Fixing all past, present, and future
with institutions, and enigmas—

what is there for neutral
and nothing,

if everything
is
wrong or right?

A Media Inspired Solution to Everything (Modern Movements)

A pair of eyes stare at the “problem”.
A single mind labels, calculates, and retains.
A pair of hands do nothing for meaningful progress.
Another group of “activists” yell: change!, change!, change!

Selfie Job

Another day of internet fame

Giving our selfies to the world

Loving fake realism abound

Bright as diamonds and pearls.

We could reflect on vanity

We could unpack and unfurl

This camera lens needs a model,

Please be the next Cover Girl.

Recent Art: The Truly Amazing

Handpicked; no filter, true—why wait?

These photos; we are scrolling pages,

Even on fine dinner dates.

Selfless as one must be

To take the perfect selfie

Relax and snap that picture;

Capture your inner luxury.

Becoming as real as we are,

Face to face with the stars.

Everyone has Problems

I used to have problems,
You see;
Many, to tell the truth.

I used to complain incessantly,
Until I found it of no use.

I used to have problems,
You see;
There is ample proof.

My problems are over for today
Because I made change,

It was the best thing I could do.
