ghosts cannot kill

life after life
life after this coffee is gone, slipped out of its cup
computer screens bleeping, drama queens screaming
after a walk in the woods, after silence
thoughts of my father
pop up like mushrooms in spring,
me as a father now especially
as that one spire, strident, fixture in my life
once was, as afraid of the dark
as bumps in the night, he stands there
dead eyes, calming, voided, silhouette doorway
telling me the same thing he told me to make me feel safe:
a ghost has never killed anyone in the history of time,
no one has died from seeing a ghost,
and if i were going to die i would have done it by now
he told me that without exaggeration
i wonder are they real
or are they just gone when they are

the cat and knowing pt 1.

Watching a backyard view;
there she wants to go.

Seeing this sight unfamiliar,
there she wants to live.

Sociopolitical

Sociopolitical,
as lipstick and licorice;
kiss with the tongue,
hard feelings then diminish.

We won’t mention that again.

She said she’s always fine,
the next week she died.

I have the text to prove it.

-Found her along a country roadside
with holes and blood and mud.
The Sunday newspaper said it as
a matter of fact- Just. Like. That.

We had this one class together…
-Fremdsprachen, Deutsch.

Who writes that shit anyway?
It can’t be real-

Those papers…

A life that lacks is labeled as that.
A life on track is labeled as that.

Hands tied, for gosh sakes!
Bright white lines,
Coldest milk shake,
I was on Valium so I don’t remember that day- anyway.

Then the poetry reading was over…
So was everything else-

No apprehension
No hesitation.

What’s tension?
We mention:

Now-a-days,
A lifetime away,
Full of choices
Did you hear them voices?

And you thought for a walk.
And you thought for a talk.
And you made art with chalk
that did not last so long.

-Some cloudy milk transparency.

But that was all you did,
then you slept-

after the sun had left.

Also, danke schön Pakistan.

How We Change (apocryphal)

Let slip ever gracious smile
Wearing guarded masked face
Traded out for something more
Fake laugh covers a spiteful distaste

What hangs under that brightly painted coat?
What meaning lies deep lined visage rote?
Opened eyes with cleared throat
Acutely minded, yet somehow remote

Someone once said
That someone once spoke
Now they don’t speak at all
Let those loose on thin lines fall

We can only change ourselves

Phased out- ostracized
Effectively unduly replaced
Not there,
AWOL in ways
Then they cut cantankerous chains…  (ostensibly)

Surprisingly,
We wonder why—
We care
We must say:
Who makes my day?
And am I okay?

We are all different from last week
Are you here, today?

Extimate

Change your mind;

Grow-progress

Shift in your seat

Move your feet

Better your posture

Be discrete

And before you forget

Exist like the rest

Bent on sediment

Bent on sediment

Bent on sediment

Present tense.

Overcoming The Future @loftliterary

After the drunken interactions, bike accidents, moving, and ill words, starting the day out with work seemed somewhat refreshing.

J.J. sits next to me exhausted, however, happy not to be cleaning out apartments in the summer heat.

Dead flowers and ornaments lined the paths we walked, remnants crumpled under feet.

Memories of our lives lined the paths we walked, lost with loss, a tangible defeat.

Now we see.

Now we hardly speak.

Now step to the sea, feel reason.

The past was a lesson, like the passing of seasons.

All pressure and then release.

Subtle while discrete.

Writing of what we had midday on the black hot paved street.

Evening rain soon washed away the chalk.

Milky puddles were all to be seen.

A natural deed.

Mad at the steps for being so hard on the feet.

Straight-line conclusion amidst a fork in the road, an easy path is not taken by those who are bold.

Now I see.
