Black Friday Sale

Convenient excuse to be excessive,
Spending the money we don’t have.
Bringing cheap products from afar,
Set to come across our open lands.
Exchanging labeled needs for wants;
Buying into a tightly regulated sham.
Ads and companies tell us what is so,
We, the herd of sheep and little lamb.

How We Change (apocryphal)

Let slip ever gracious smile
Wearing guarded masked face
Traded out for something more
Fake laugh covers a spiteful distaste

What hangs under that brightly painted coat?
What meaning lies deep lined visage rote?
Opened eyes with cleared throat
Acutely minded, yet somehow remote

Someone once said
That someone once spoke
Now they don’t speak at all
Let those loose on thin lines fall

We can only change ourselves

Phased out- ostracized
Effectively unduly replaced
Not there,
AWOL in ways
Then they cut cantankerous chains…  (ostensibly)

Surprisingly,
We wonder why—
We care
We must say:
Who makes my day?
And am I okay?

We are all different from last week
Are you here, today?

“The Apple Capital”

This town
Under bluffs of a river valley

Ancient trees
Fixed in rich dirt of sediment

Through the
Sandstone foundation of long forgotten
Specters under the sky
Incarnation of this “American Dream”

Their progeny haunt
Stalk
Past the dying brilliance
Of traditional affairs

–The audacity of Business
Gathering
From the land
Of which they do not own
–the view
That warns
The conscious being

A vast distance between states
Two, as splendid
Establishment in the new frontier
Dust to flesh

Once whited maps
Growing with pride
Now what it stood for is merely a novelty

American Sonnet

We lost the interest before we began

Moving fixed posters on the thick walls

Level-headed distinguished man

Digging hard and working all

Sight beheld in the palm of worn hand

Many created problems we’ve called

We never tried to make a plan

Sedentary thoughts prove scrawled

From Forefather’s will in our acts we’ve strayed

Many against the conservative man

Labels aren’t of working clay

Written books in stern pale hand

Lest knowledge gone, saves the old way

Covered maps in possessive words to understand

Ponderings of the lighted day

Proven by those that they can stand

Mixed pot of melting to tell

Ignorant jump so high for frail joy

The inner workings of this great hell

Innocent lost those few trained boys

White colors cast the witch’s spell

Conjured up in those open young and coy

That symbolic dust holds to the clouds well

Annoyance of such fickle vetted choice

Locked into strict box orthodox-stayed course

The American Dream’s been broken and forced.

New Trendy Clothes,

But the Act is Old

Speaking of what you’ve almost sold

As if you’re talking to a fool

Stepping with everyone- the everyday crowd,

I bet you make Art too.
