chocolate milk

in elementary school
i used to violently shake
chocolate milk cartons
until they were mixed
sweet as milk shakes.

i learned something
important here:
if you don’t like
what you get, stir things up
a bit to your liking.

i still do this activity
on occasion today,
shake, stir, twist–
just not with milk cartons,
tho i still muck with taste.

Seeing the End

I’ve seen doors locked for all time,
purpose in moments changed,
and boxes closed indefinitely

with familiar occupants inside.
Yet, still I lift my head in ice pellets
coming down on the campus mall,

and still my view is fixed straight-
forward when allowed, and with
this aside, and taking on alternatives.

I exist in a one bedroom apartment
in Southeast, brushing teeth, put-
ting my eyeballs in to see just this.

Minnesota turkey deaths

Similar to farm raised turkey
and Monsanto corn,

our immune systems have been compromised
by the monocultures we create;

our tendency for convenience and familiarity
has placed us at the precarious edge of catastrophe,

absolutely starved-fat and defensively naked.

Though,
it does save us money at the grocery,
and help those in control of the industry.
