cold as cold as cold and cspan

it is 6 degrees in frogtown, mn,
i am inside sick watching cspan

and a baby sleep in his rock
& play, wife in the kitchen watching

a cracked screen. my face is full
of snot, head full of congestion, watching

talking heads tell me about “fake news”
and debates and their influences.

(easy, i could take their words for it
they probably don’t care about mine.)

someone wears a bandaid on his cheek;
the president wants a deep dive

investigation; and the red hot chili
peppers had a forgotten album in 2004, says reddit.

i wonder about where i was at that time,
i don’t know how that all factors

into everything, but mostly i care
about what is right here, around me.

wooden floors and naked feet–pallid,
lemon sinks to the bottom of my mug

as a blue whale in the south pacific,
muddy water coffee waits on a tablecloth,

plastic snug on the windows, electrical heaters
and baby toys. a coat hangs slack

like yesterday. i know how hillary
felt when she fell into that van,

now i’m with her. now i am sick.
now i am achy as a lab skeleton cold.

…to dust again

it’s really just
time: fast
swift and long

it is.

ask the river,
ask the sun in the sky,
ask human minds.

there is nothing
more than
the ticking clock

and the
haste of its
meaning.

never does
Gregorian become
gregarian.

and then
there is not.

there is a stone
and a box.

there is some
writing
on thinning
pages.

i wonder how
these rocks
gathered.

found their way
under my feet.

do they know
i stand fading
into sand
also, too?

and to dust again

time on
time,
on you.

different as you (ne commute)

a small video
starts up,
so i start
my day.

any day
feels a little
better,
created
new life.

past spires
and beige
brick
history.

& a landlord
could
shut the
heat

at this
warming
time in
the season.

& someday
is here,
not gone
as many;

artists still
starve,
and keys
keep ticking.

to write
it all down,
different
as you.

no complaints.
no complaints.

and stoplight.
and go.

You Didn’t Win Either? (unluckysucker)

Everyone in Minnesota
did not win the Powerball
jackpot last night…

So—Today we can all bask in
the cold-light glory
that no one near us
is better off than the rest of us__probably.

We can now all
relish in this thought,
and be our special way of nice
over such a cutting idea.

As it were, broke, sad me, holding
a job with frozen fingers—
not throwing Benjamins on
a naked golden yacht (no fun & sun).

As it were, us crying together
at the blackening void of
our faithful fantasies vanished,
as summer beach scenes
and graduates of Coffman Union
around long winter breaks.

Cry sad local gambler, cry hard with me.
You didn’t win either, ha!

Seeing the End

I’ve seen doors locked for all time,
purpose in moments changed,
and boxes closed indefinitely

with familiar occupants inside.
Yet, still I lift my head in ice pellets
coming down on the campus mall,

and still my view is fixed straight-
forward when allowed, and with
this aside, and taking on alternatives.

I exist in a one bedroom apartment
in Southeast, brushing teeth, put-
ting my eyeballs in to see just this.

growing old

i would open yawn
but i am too tired,
i would full stretch
but i can’t move;
this cold morning
on this stiff floor
has me wondering
reaching, searching–
an aging body,
stuck in this time,
wholly consumed.
